The Game Called Life

by Rev. Brandon Baranowski Email

Life is a funny, enigmatic kind of thing. Writing for a pagan community, life is a precious object held on a pedestal, but there really aren't any rules, guidelines, or procedures to define how we ought to live. Sure, different sects, covenants, and sanctuaries have what they believe to be the answer, but there seems to be a universal truth missing. This universal truth is what people have lived their entire lives in pursuit of, have died for, and, all too often, killed for.

Is there a universal truth, a holy grail of sorts? Most would agree that if there is indeed a god or gods, our limited perception through the physical veil prevents us from possibly ever truly comprehending this being(s), despite what some, like Augustine (of Hippo), have claimed. The only truth, it seems, is that there is no truth and unfortunately I spend most of my time identifying those untruths.

Through all of my studies have I stumbled across even the faintest of hints? Well, I haven't built a quantum computer, stairway to heaven, nor a time machine. What I have found, whether god given grand design or Darwinian survival of the fittest, life is a gift. The most amazing gift of all.

Those who fail to see this, complain or even put a stop to this marvelous gift, have insulted life to the fullest. Life isn't about what it could, would, or will be. Life is right now and, hate to break it to you all, you're already living it!

There possibly will never be a way to prove or disprove the existence of god(s) and surely there are no means at this given time. What can be proven is that life exists. The very thought of thinking is consciousness. I think therefore I am. And no one can govern this. Life is not biased, just, or fair. It is what it is. To live is to be alive and life is about living. It is about the plethora of prismatic emotions that blind, complicate, and engulf our everyday existence. There is no pursuit of happiness. The government spends it's time brainwashing and creating a numbness that hinders the emotional pallet. Others assist or do the same in their own ways. The pain, loneliness, heartache, sorrow, grievance, anger, temptation and uncertainty lets us know that we are alive! Without these emotions there could be no happiness, love, or progress.

This could very well be the only life you have, why not do your best to make it a life worth living? But don't forget along the way that life doesn't start when you're good and ready for it to, it's already begun. Just ask an elder friend, parent, or grandparent, they will tell you how fast life truly goes and how quick a 'could of' becomes a 'should of.'

If nothing else, if you live your life as long as you've got here, you can say when it's all said and done that you gave it your best shot and never gave up. If there is a God, you can tell him (or her) how disappointed you are and if there isn't... Well, what does it matter anyway? your consciousness will cease to exist, so you couldn't lament over it even if you wanted to.

The point is, life is too wonderful to get caught up on the subtleties. If you try to enjoy even the worst parts, life will go much smoother, I promise. Don't take life too seriously, you'll never make it out alive.
